Global Village on the Move - Perth 2005
by Peter Kageyama

In February, I was a presenter at Global Village on the Move, at Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. I had been a presenter at last summer's Global Village program at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and was invited to participate in the "On the Move" version this year.

These programs are extraordinary. They bring together young people, both students and professionals, from all over the world. Business and cultural understanding are the cornerstones of the program, with participants engaging in seminars and workshops built around real world business issues. The real joy is in being able to interact with these people and hear them talk. Everyday a world of experiences and perspectives gets shared over lunch or coffee. Global networks are being formed and you can sense that the seeds of future cooperation are being sown.

I presented a two day workshop on the workplace of the 21st century and how the Creative Economy has changed the way business and employees conduct themselves. My class included an incredible array of people from all over the world: Australian, Japanese, Chinese, Singaporan, Mauriscian, Malaysian, New Zeleand, Slovenian, Omani, French, Italian and American. The discussion focused on the differences between our countries, but we found that we had far more in common than many would have thought. The impact of the creative economy is underway in all of our countries, with some further along in the process, but with the others rapidly following. And we all agreed that the workplace that our parents knew is NOT the workplace where we now operate.

It was a privilege for me to interact with these people and I feel that I learned as much from them as they (hopefully!) did of me. To my GV Class of 2005 - Thank you for a great experience and good luck!
