VicUrban
Visits Tampa Bay
May, 2005

SMG, CreativeTampaBay and the Tampa
Downtown Partnership hosted a group of Australian urban planners
as they toured the U.S. The planners were from VicUrban,
the State of Victoria's urban development agency. They oversee public-private
development partnerships and provide oversight in the areas of design
excellence, sustainability, smart growth, affordable housing and
community development. Creative Tampa Bay President Peter Kageyama
was a keynote speaker for their organization during his
tour of Australia in February.
The
Aussies met with local developers and engaged in presentations to
key government, planning, development and business officials in
Tampa and St. Petersburg. They noted striking similarities between
Tampa today and Melbourne 15 to 20 years ago -- both with large
working ports, a river in the metropolitan heart and a downtown
with activity only during the work day. Today, Melbourne is one
of the world's most livable cities and a possible model for our
own development.
